Entries are now open for the Capegate Shopping Centre’s 2025 Braai Challenge.
The competition is open to South African residents over 18. Participants must live in Cape Town. Only one entry per person is permitted. You must hurry as the deadline for entries is 27 August 2025.
The winner will get a prize package worth R30 000, including a 2-night stay at Kol Mountain Lodge. The winning recipe will also be featured on the shopping centre’s website during National Braai Day week. So, everyone will get the chance to recreate the winning dish.
How it works:
Ten finalists will battle it out on Saturday, 6 September, while celebrity chef Bertus Basson will oversee the culinary showdown.
The competition is in a three-round elimination format. It tests the contestants’ skills across classic South African braai staples.
Round one challenges the top 10 finalists to create the ultimate boerewors roll.
In the second round the surviving five contestants are asked to prepare a steak to the judges’ exact specifications.
The final rounds see the three remaining contestants tasked to prepare their signature dish. This is the recipe they entered with. They do this after a R800 trolley dash through Checkers for fresh ingredients.
This dish will be scored on taste, creativity, technique, and presentation while maintaining authentic South African flair. They will have two and a half hours to prepare their dish.
Second place receives a R2 500 Capegate gift card. Third place takes home a Capegate gift card worth R1 500. All finalists receive goodie bags courtesy of Capegate and Checkers.
Contestants can enter online at capegatecentre.co.za, where full terms and conditions are available.
