MasterChef SA: Bougie Brunch Challenge Highlights

Every week MasterChef SA throws some interesting challenges at their contestants. This week, the judges had help from guest judge Ebrahiem du Toit, from The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg. They tasked the contestants with creating a bougie brunch. One dish required contestants to create a dessert inspired by a brunch cocktail. Another dish involved reimagining the brunch staple, avocado toast.

There were a lot of ideas. Yet, a few of the MasterChef SA contests struggled to deliver. The judges were left unimpressed. 31-year-old financial accountant Refe Dimbaza came out on top after the challenge. Judge Justine Drake loved her spicy Chorizo and quail egg shakshuka. Chef Ebie praised her mimosa granita dessert. For her avocado dish, she made a creamy avocado with quail egg and parsley oil on bread.

The three contestants who found themselves in the bottom three were Nabila, Bridget and Naledi. Unfortunately for Naledi Matshitse her time in the MasterChef kitchen has ended. Naledi is no stranger to reality cooking competitions, having won season 8 of the Ultimate Braai Master.

 However it was evident from the start of the episode that the 42-year-old homemaker felt overwhelmed by the task. It took her a while to come up with an idea for her avocado toast. She stumbled when Chef Katlego and Chef Ebie quizzed her. She was completely flustered. Halfway through the challenge she gained some confidence and got a second wind vowing ‘not to give up.’

However, that was not enough to keep her safe. The judges were unimpressed with her piña colada soft porridge dessert with pineapple, star anise and cinnamon. I found it interesting and unique. Her avocado toast with rosemary chicken, quail eggs, caramelised onions and avocado puree could not save her.
